Background:

Maybelle started out life like any other Negro child growing up in the 20’s. She was met with slander, prejudice and overall hate from those people who were exceedingly ignorant. Maybelle, however, never let anything get her down. She learned how to deal with people by either keeping her mouth shut or making some sort of sarcastic comment back to them that they couldn’t understand.

Maybelle fell in love with music, rhythm and blues to be exact, and made it her goal to become a DJ. Her mother and father were very supportive of their daughter, but knew the hardships she’d have to face along the way. How very right they were.

When Maybelle was a mere 21 years old she met and fell in love with a handsome man named Jonathan Stubbs. The two of them dated for a while before they were married. Maybelle gave birth to their first child Seaweed not a year after they were married and the couple lived happily in a small home on North Avenue. The two, while they did well, still struggled but love held their family together. Maybelle always felt that without love, there was nothing else in this world and so she showered her baby with nothing but.

Three years later, Maybelle once again found she was pregnant and nine months later her baby girl, Inez was born. She and Jonathan were both happy, and their family felt a little bit more whole with Inez in it.

Maybelle was still trying her hardest to break into the music business, and going to radio stations all over Baltimore. She kept getting turned away, and Jonathan seeing her frustration started saving back a little money. It would be a good seven years later that Jonathan would present Maybelle with the keys to a record store, an anniversary gift. Maybelle also had a surprise for him; she’d finally been hired on at a rhythm and blues radio station, due to start the following week as a DJ, even though she had no formal training. They liked her style.

The day was turning out to be one of the best days of their lives, but how quickly it can change.

That night there was a ruckus on North Avenue; Jonathan rushed out of their home to see what was going on. A group of drunken men had taken to trashing the small Negro community, throwing rocks into windows, beating the cars with baseball bats, and so on. Jonathan tried to get them to stop, while Maybelle and the children were safely tucked away in one of the bedrooms of their home. The men attacked Jonathan Stubbs, beating him to death with the baseball bats before they left with a squealing of tires. Maybelle ran out, screaming and crying as she cradled her husband’s head in her lap. The sound of sirens seemed so far away as Jonathan took his last ragged breath. Maybelle was in a daze the next few days that followed, and when they buried Jonathan, Maybelle made a promise to herself to do all she could, to live for the moment, and to never let hate settle in her heart. She sold their home, and moved into the home that was attached to the back of the record shop.

Maybelle did as she promised herself, running her record shop , DJing, and finally she was approached by Corny Collins from The Corny Collins show after he heard her on the radio and saw her son dancing outside of the school. Corny asked her to come on the air, to get the kids of her community as well. Corny wanted to integrate the show, but the producers had no use for such a thing. Corny insisted, and finally Maybelle was given one day a month, Negro Day, on the Corny Collins show. It was one foot in the door to Maybelle, and with her head held high she did the best that she could with that one day a month. But Negro day was short lived (in Maybelle’s opinion) and was cancelled shortly after the Dynamites preformed the same song that Velma’s girls did. Even if the Dynamites had wrote it.

In 1962 things began changing, dramatically and Maybelle wished that Jonathan could’ve lived to see that day. One day, while Maybelle was hosting a small get together at her record shop, her son came in with three white teenagers. Two of which were on The Corny Collins show. Needless to say, she was a bit confused but after the initial shock wore off they were welcomed with open arms. Not too long into their party Edna, Tracy’s mother, showed up demanding that Tracy come home. Seeing that Tracy didn’t want to go home, Maybelle enticed Edna with the food that was being served and convinced Edna to stay. She and Edna spoke for a bit, and Penny asked why they were throwing a party. With a slightly sheepish look about her, Maybelle explained that Negro Day had been cancelled. Tracy demanded that they do something about it, and once again Maybelle was taken aback by Tracy’s eagerness to do something that so few white people would do. Maybelle agreed, however, and thought that a protest march would be a good idea. They scheduled to meet in the church parking lot the next day.

The day started out fairly well, making signs and Maybelle going over exactly what could go wrong. She knew that if something were to happen that they’d all go to jail, but she prayed awfully hard that none of them would. They had all gathered, about to start when Tracy showed up. Maybelle told her there was no turning back now, and that if she did this she’d probably get booted from The Corny Collins show. Tracy knew this, but still went with them. They marched all the way to WYZT, where they were met by a police blockade.

Maybelle tried to explain to the officers that this was nothing more than a peaceful demonstration and the man ignored her. Maybelle was shocked when Tracy hit the man over the head with her sign, telling her to stop but it was too late. They made Tracy run as herself, Edna and the rest of the group blocked them from getting to her.

Thankfully Tracy got away, and Maybelle along with Inez went home since her son had been arrested. Wilbur, Tracy’s father, bailed out Seaweed who went to rescue Penny and Tracy. Maybelle was worried sick, so she and Inez sat up in the kitchen talking, until they heard Seaweed and the rest of the gang in the record shop. Maybelle and Inez walked in, watching the group for a moment and she cleared her throat. She asked Seaweed if they were hiding out Tracy, and smacked him on the back of the head after she asked why he hadn’t thought of that before. Tracy had done so much for them, and Maybelle wanted to keep her safe. It was then that she noticed Penny and Seaweed together, after asking why they were hiding her out. She told them that love was precious, but to watch out for the ignorant people because it was bound to happen.

It was then that they started formulating a plan to get Tracy into the Miss Teenage Hairspray competition. They did so by creating a distraction, and the police force accidentally carried in Tracy in one of the oversized hairspray canisters. Maybelle watched from the sidelines as the police were locked out of the studio with a large smile while Tracy showed up the rest of the girls. It was then that Link grabbed Inez, dragging her out to dance while Maybelle beamed with pride. Much to everyone’s surprise at the end of the dance off, Corny announced that Little Inez was the winner of the Miss Teenage Hairspray contest, and that The Corny Collins show was now and forever integrated. Maybelle couldn’t have been happier and more proud at this moment. Corny grabbed her hand, saying that it was her time and Maybelle wrapped up the Miss Teenage Hairspray contest.

Personality: Miss Maybelle is a pretty happy-go-lucky woman, always ready with a warm smile and good food to ease someone’s nerves. She isn’t a prejudice woman by any means, and believes that if you show someone enough love they’ll come around. She’s a very proud woman, walking to her full height at all times with her head held high. She speaks her mind when she has to, but doesn’t really care for confrontation. She’ll try to avoid it at all costs if necessary.

When she loves, she loves deeply and is loyal to those that she befriends. Miss Maybelle never meets a stranger, although she is slightly wary of most people due to what she’s grown up in. She doesn’t really mean to be that way, but once you’ve had so much hate thrown at you because of the color of your skin you tend to shy away. She loves singing, and dancing, and does so as often as she can. Music is also another love of hers, and she can’t go a day without listening to some.

Family is very important to Maybelle, her son and daughter always have come first in her life. People that she becomes close to become family as well and they are never turned away. She doesn’t do much in the way of flirting, but isn’t blind to it. It just might shock her a little bit, but she’ll find her footing eventually and come back with something.

Appearance: Maybelle is a very statuesque woman, standing at a solid 5’11” and taller if she’s in her heels leading her to be at least over 6’0”. She’s never been, and never will be ashamed of the fact that she’s a bigger woman. She loves her curves, and doesn’t plan on getting rid of them. Her skin is an even brown, and she takes very good care of herself to make sure that she is as blemish free as possible. Her natural hair color is a rich brown, and long. However, Maybelle prefers wearing blonde wigs in the latest styles; beehives, and short. She has quite the collection, and wears them as her mood sees fit. She loves wearing long, and flowing dresses espically if they have some sort of animal print on them. The louder the color, the happier she is.

Likes: Pecan Pie, good southern cooking, singing, dancing, music (R&B), her family, Tracy, Edna and Wilbur Turnblad, Corny Collins, Penny Pingleton, her wigs, sweet tea, and meeting new people.

Dislikes: Stupid/Ignorant/Prejudice people, not having music, Velma Von Tussle, bland anything (life needs to be a bit spicy), men who think they can get what they want from her, Nap-a-way commercials and smoking.
